Amsterdam attractive to Chinese

Now there are 840 Chinese companies in Amsterdam. A recent phenomenon described by Fact Sheet from Gemeente Amsterdam Bureau Onderzoek en Statistiek , which is the establishment of businesses from China in Amsterdam. Since 2000, the establishment of Chinese companies is booming. Companies from China have a strong sectoral focus. They are mainly found in ICT and transport. Their numbers and contribution to employment in Amsterdam is still limited and can be mostly found in these two sectors. Experts expect that in the future there will be more acquisitions in Amsterdam by companies from China. Also for the Netherlands, this brings interesting opportunities. A large entrepreneurial Chinese community makes Amsterdam an attractive place for new Chinese talents and companies.

Many of the conclusions of ITT’s China study have been integrated in the latest report of the Dutch Advisory Council for science Technology Policy (AWT), ‘China’s extended hand – How Chinese and Dutch knowledge can strengthen each other’. In the report, AWT indicates that China’s rise as a country of knowledge and innovation is impressive, and advises the Dutch government to intensify the cooperation with China in the field of research and innovation while paying attention to a number of challenges. The AWT suggests that the Dutch government should continue investigating in its knowledge base, which is imbedded in an environment where universities, knowledge institute and companies are jointly engaged in innovation. This is the best way to guarantee that the Netherlands will remain an attractive science partner and the R&D activities will not be transferred to China.

Together with Duisenberg School of Finance (DSF), International Top Talent (ITT) organized an event for 30 bachelor students who are interested to follow their Masters education at the heart of Europe, Amsterdam. The students were carefully pre-selected by ITT through university network and local talent pool and would like to get more information about the MSc Finance at DSF. The event was held at the ING Bank Shanghai Branch Headoffice on 15th and 16th March 2012. The Managing Director of DSF, Jeroen van Loon and Managing Director of ING Bank Shanghai Branch, Piter de Jong welcomed the students at the event. In the recently published Times Higher Education World University Reputation Ranking 2012 , 2 Chinese Universities and 5 Netherlands Universities are in the list of Top 100 in the world. Tsinghua University (China) and Peking University (China) are ranked as No. 30 and No. 38. In the range of No. 50 to 100, Delft University of Technology, University of Amsterdam, Utrecht University, Leiden University and Wageningen University and Research Center separately hold their positions. Compared to the same ranking in 2011, the rise of Chinese Universities is remarkable, as they are getting higher ranked every year.
