The 4th Bencham Innovation Platform debate about how to create a win-win situation in Sino-Dutch Innovation & Talent cooperation took place in Shanghai on Tuesday 6th December 2011. The honored Consul General of the Netherlands, Mr. Peter Potman opened the panel discussion. Experts from DSM, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Philips Research Asia, Fudan University, and International Top Talent shared different opinions in the debate. The best way to create the win-win situation is that two countries should get to know each other in a deeper level which requires more communication. The first screening of the VPRO Tegenlicht documentary of International Top Talent on the recruitment of Chinese top talents was also shown during the event. About 70 people in Bencham and International Top Talent’s network attended the event.

In between the broadcasts of the VPRO documentary entitled ‘Nederland buiten kennis’ on 7 November and the broadcast of the documentary entitled ‘Holland gets talent’, VPRO’s Tegenlicht and The Royal Netherlands Academy for Arts and Sciences (KNAW) have organised an event on how to attract, train and keep knowledge workers in the Netherlands. This will place take place on 10 November at 7 pm in Science Center NEMO in Amsterdam. A sneak preview of the documentary, made by Kees Brouwer, will be followed by a panel discussion. During the meeting entrepreneurs and scientists will discuss how the Netherlands can keep its position as a knowledge economy. KNAW President Robbert Dijkgraaf, Chairman of De Jonge Akademie Peter-Paul Verbeek, CFO of ASML Peter Wennink and director R&D FrieslandCampina Emmo Meijer will participate in the debate. During this event, participants from over 25 countries will discuss how to foster positive cooperation between China and Europe in the areas of innovation and talent. The Dutch ICT sector faces a severe shortage of professionals to facilitate growth in the sector and to replace an ageing workforce. The Amsterdam Innovation Motor (AIM) has estimated a shortage in the ICT sector of 11,700 professionals in 2012. To ensure the growth of one of its core sectors, AIM has asked International Top Talent for advice. A recent report from ITT recommends that the ICT sector in Amsterdam targets high-level professionals in China for specific IT positions. AIM plans to organize a Roadshow to Shanghai in February 2012 for ICT companies to meet talented professionals in China. Top students from Fudan University are interested in starting their career in a Dutch company. This is one of the outcomes of the first Dutch Career Day taking place today at Fudan. Over 100 students discussed with Dutch companies like DSM, Philips, Rabobank, De Lage Landen, and Mattmo about career opportunities. Dutch Consul General, Mr Peter Potman, gave insights in Dutch company culture and chances for top students of Fudan. ‘This event is a great chance for us to meet and greet with Dutch companies and to get information about working in a Dutch culture, says one of the participants. The Dutch Career Day is an initiative from Dutch Studies Center Fudan Groningen and is co-organized with International Top Talent.

Dutch companies in China can meet and greet more than 100 top students from Fudan School of Economics. The first Dutch Career Day is organized on 31st October in Shanghai. In this event, companies get the opportunity to meet Chinese students from top university in person who know a lot about the Netherlands and attract them for job vacancies. Companies can share their value proposition by a company presentation, participate in an informal lunch and give optional private workshop to the students.
The Dutch Career Studies Center Fudan Groningen is an initiative from Groningen University in the Netherlands and Fudan University in China. The Center wants to carry out teaching and research programmes on the Dutch economy, politics, society and culture, cultivate experts and talents in the field of Dutch Studies, so as to enhance the mutual understanding and exchange between China and the Netherlands. On September 15, Dutch ICT companies including Alliander, Dolby laboratories and the two Amsterdam universities came to discuss ways to solve the shortage of labour in ICT professionals and students. In this round table organised by ITT and the Amsterdam ICT cluster, the increasing importance of attracting ICT professionals from abroad, in particular from China, India and South-Africa was highlighted. Discussions will continue in November in a second round table hosted by the ICT cluster of the Amsterdam Innovatie Motor and ITT.

The retention of Chinese professionals is an important challenge for Dutch multinational companies to steer their innovation process in China. This turned out to be an important conclusion at the roundtable discussion on innovation at CEIBS campus last week. Philips, Akzo Nobel, Shell, DSM, Unilever and Dow Chemical and Chinese companies like Ctrip discussed what MNCs in China can learn from Chinese companies on innovation. ITT shared its experience that Chinese companies are more flexible to offer top talent interesting career perspective than Dutch companies. A new roundtable discussion will be organized in November 2011 to share more experience on innovation and talent.
